Skies

I haven't written about the night in so long. I actually haven't experienced the night for quite a while. Until a few days ago I was still in the midst of that 12-hour time difference Jet-Lag, which left me going to bed no later than 9 pm, as if I was a child, obeying Wee Willy Winky's request to be in bed by 8 o'clock.

Wee Willy Winky runs through the town,
Upstairs, downstairs, in his nightgown.
Rapping at the window, crying through the lock,
"Are the children in their beds? For now it's 8 o'clock!"

Haha.. no, sorry Willy, I'm a big girl now, and have adapted to "Pacific Time," which means I finally have the energy at 10 pm to wander outside and meditate under the moon and crispy-sounding palms and listen to the water of the marina lull me into a peaceful state.

I decided to leave my anger at the whole GMO thing aside. I can only do so much. Sadly... besides, legislature has already come to their decision for this year's session. Now it's time for happy thoughts, positive and constructive actions and peace.

I climbed up Koko Crater yesterday. Finally! Doable weather, mixed with an adequate energy level on my part set the stage for a perfect hike! It wasn't nearly as arduous as I'd expected. Perhaps my two weeks of light hiking and running has helped me prepare for the big "Kohelepelepe" (Hawaiian name for Koko Crater, which actually translates to "Traveling Vagina"- based on the ancient Hawaiian myth that the goddess Pele was being stalked and followed by the Kahauloa, a pig demigod. In order to save Pele, her sister Kapo threw her vagina to the eastern part of O'ahu to distract the pig-god.....) Yeah... a really interesting way of looking at the crater that I live by. In any case, the hike was great. Not too many people, and an okay view from the top, considering the voggy air.

Green Mountains can only mean May 2011
Gah, beautiful view!

But I'm generally disappointed by the dryness of O'ahu. It's March and it looks as if there hasn't been any rain this winter. Well, disappointed may be too strong of a word, Hawaii is beautiful no matter how drought-struck. I just expected the lush-green mountains that I'm used to at this time of the year. I was actually awaiting green mountains and blues skies... instead it's browned landscapes with dried silver leaves, and clouded nights. But I am absolutely not complaining. It's a million times better than snow and gray that chills you to the bone. It's at least alive, in a dry and warm sort of way. I couldn't actually ask for more. I'm in fricken' Hawaii. That is definitely something I'll be eternally grateful for :)

Sandys last week...

Dry Koko Crater from the back, still beautiful

I hope some clear skies come along so that I can sprawl out on a towel in my lawn at night, and watch all the beautiful stars. I missed them so much when I was in Germany. I felt like they didn't exist when I was there... even though I knew perfectly well that they were just hiding being a blanket of snow-clouds. The random patterns made by the stars makes the sky so powerful, so perfect. I love the familiar feeling of certain groups of stars, even if they're not necessarily in a constellation. It's like being home. That being said, I don't want to go out into space though. I just love the presence of those "heavenly bodies" over my head... makes me feel safe.
