Ethical Flags go up when the topic of genetic engineering arises. That is the point where I put my foot down and say that science has just gone too far.
Aldous Huxley warned us of it in his 1931 novel, "Brave New World"- which happens to be my favorite book. The book describes us in a world where we and the outcome of our lives are completely determined before our birth (by the way, we're born in bottles.) We are drugged to suppress our thoughts and feelings of freedom and humanity, we are bound to technology and cut off from nature.
It's a pretty sick story but I absolutely love it. It basically mirrors some of my core values. I am completely against bio-enginnering technology (which is another reason why continuing with medicine is so difficult for me.)
I found this image online somewhere, and it totally reminded me of Huxley's book, and what's happening to our species. Why is evolution taking that turn? Are we driving ourselves to extinction?
I really wonder what the future is going to look like, and if there is any hope in avoiding something like that ^.
What is it with companies like Bayer, DuPont, Dow-Agro and Monsanto? What is so great about the prospect of money that drives humans to be so greedy, leading to such sick inventions like pesticides that cause cancer? (By the way, all those companies are being sued for violating human rights and health laws: http://www.mediafreedominternational.org/2011/12/01/monsanto-bayer-dow-and-others-face-trial-for-human-rights-violations/)
Don't those CEO's understand that they're killing themselves, and creating possible mutations in their future generations- their grandchildren?
We saw what happened with DDT, Agent Orange, and are now finding out about Roundup. Clearly it's all bad news for our liver and kidneys, for the environment, for the farmers, for the economy.
Sometimes I want to just go and shake those people that continue to make such bad decisions. I want to bring them down. I don't want to be scared of the food I eat, or of the air I breathe, but who does?
Honestly, don't those lab-workers and CEO's have families, kids, pets... a conscience!?!
I'll never forget the time in 8th grade when I let my rabbit hop around outside my own garden (public neighborhood grass) and the next day it was dead. I asked the landscape/ garden administration if they spray any chemicals and what effects they have on animals. Apparently they have the power to kill small mammals. WOW... thanks a lot!
I'm tired to complaining about these evil beasts.. I want to DO something about it. If there's anything I believe in, it's the snowball effect of positive change.
The question now is... how do I go about that?
